Foundational Grants
Foundational grants are a great source of funding and tend to help not only financially, but if you communicate often and build a good relationship they are also a good source of
information on successful business building.
First lets define what a foundation is according to the
Tax Reform Act of 1969:
A foundation is a “nongovernmental, nonprofit organization having a principal fund of it’s own, managed by it’s trustees and directors, established to maintain or aid charitable, educational, religious, or other activities serving the public good primarily by making grants to nonprofit organizations.”
All a foundation is meant to do is “maintain or aid” nonprofit organizations. They primarily do this through grants directly, but indirectly they like to have a small active role in organizations they fund by offering management or professional help. They have all sorts of people with varying backgrounds especially the large ones.
There are four different types of foundations. They are:

Independent foundations- This is also known as a "private foundation", and is the type we grant writers normally want to approach such as the Ford Foundation. This type of foundation get their funding from a single source like an individual, a family or a corporation. Private foundations are required by law to give away a minimum of 5% of their assets each and every year or they will lose their non-profit status.
Company-sponsored foundations- Many companies sponsor a foundation completely separate from there company but usually very closely aligned with the companies interest, especially employees.
Community foundations- This type of foundation is also known as a "public foundation" and just as it’s name implies its usually setup and maintained by the local community in which it is located and directly benefits the community. Public foundations are supported primarily through donations from the general public and they also receive a great deal of funding from foundations and corporate grants.
Operating foundations- These foundations fund only programs they directly administer and do not accept outside applications.
